Chiron in astrology is the point in your Birth Chart that shows where you carry an old, sensitive wound and how living with that wound can make you wiser and more useful to other people. Named after the wounded healer of Greek myth, Chiron describes a tender spot you learn to work with, not a flaw you fix once.
Chiron is a supporting layer of the chart, not its foundation. Read it after the core trio explained in our guide to the big three in astrology: Sun, Moon and rising, because a wound only makes sense once you know whose story it belongs to.
A short note before we begin: this article is for self-reflection and entertainment. It is not medical, legal, financial or psychological advice, and it does not replace a therapist or counsellor when something still hurts.
What is Chiron, astronomically?
Chiron is a small icy body roughly 200 km across. The astronomer Charles Kowal identified it on 1 November 1977 on photographic plates taken at Palomar Observatory in California. Its official name is 2060 Chiron, and because it later showed a faint coma like a comet, it also carries the comet designation 95P/Chiron.
Chiron circles the Sun on a stretched, eccentric path between Saturn and Uranus. At its closest it dips just inside Saturn's orbit, about 8.4 astronomical units from the Sun; at its farthest it nearly reaches Uranus, about 19 units out. One full lap takes roughly 50 to 51 years. Chiron was the first known member of a class now called centaurs: small bodies that cross the paths of the giant planets and do not keep stable orbits over millions of years.
This eccentric orbit matters for astrology. Chiron moves quickly near the Sun and slowly far from it, so its time in each sign is very uneven: about a year and a half in Libra, but close to eight years in Aries or Pisces.
Who was Chiron in Greek myth?
In Greek myth Chiron was a centaur unlike the others. Most centaurs were wild and violent; Chiron was gentle, learned and immortal, the son of the Titan Kronos, whom the Romans called Saturn, and the nymph Philyra. On Mount Pelion he taught medicine, music, archery and hunting, and his pupils included Asclepius, the god of healing, as well as the heroes Achilles and Jason.
His defining story is an accident. An arrow from Heracles, tipped with the poisonous blood of the Hydra, struck Chiron. Being immortal, he could not die; being a healer, he still could not cure himself. In the best-known versions he finally gave up his immortality, in some tellings so that Prometheus could be freed, and Zeus placed him among the stars.
Astrologers draw three ideas from this myth: a wound that is not your fault, a wound that never fully closes, and wisdom that grows from living with it. That is the origin of the phrase "wounded healer".
What does Chiron in astrology mean for your Birth Chart?
Astrologers began working with Chiron in the late 1970s, and books such as Melanie Reinhart's Chiron and the Healing Journey made it a common extra in modern charts. It has no traditional sign rulership. Most readings of Chiron in astrology rest on four themes:
- The wound: an area where you felt hurt, left out or "not enough", often early in life.
- Sensitivity: the place where a small remark lands hard and where you either overcompensate or avoid.
- Healing through others: what you learned the hard way is often what you explain best to someone else.
- Acceptance: the aim is a workable relationship with the sore spot, not a cure that erases it.
Chiron's sign gives the flavour of the wound, its house shows the life area where it tends to appear, and close contacts with your Sun, Moon or rising sign make it more personal. A Chiron that touches nothing personal reads more like a generational backdrop.
Chiron in astrology by sign: what does each placement mean?
Because Chiron lingers for years in some signs, many people born in the same period share a Chiron sign. Treat the sign as a shared backdrop and the house as your personal version of the story.
| Chiron sign | Possible sore spot | Gift when you work with it |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Doubt about your right to take space or act first | Courage that helps others begin |
| Taurus | Insecurity about the body, money or self-worth | A calm, grounded sense of value |
| Gemini | Feeling unheard or not clever enough | Clear, patient explanation |
| Cancer | Missing emotional safety or belonging | Care that makes others feel at home |
| Leo | Feeling unseen, fear of shining | Encouraging other people's creativity |
| Virgo | Perfectionism, never feeling useful enough | Practical, kind help with daily life |
| Libra | Losing yourself in relationships, fear of conflict | Fair and honest mediation |
| Scorpio | Trust, loss and control | Staying present with others in a crisis |
| Sagittarius | Doubt about meaning or belief | Teaching that respects other views |
| Capricorn | Pressure to achieve, distrust of authority | Steady, humane leadership |
| Aquarius | Feeling like an outsider | Groups where difference is welcome |
| Pisces | Blurred boundaries, feeling overwhelmed | Compassion with healthy limits |
A recent example shows the generational effect. Chiron spent most of 2010-2018 in Pisces and has been in Aries since 2018-2019, crossing into Taurus over 2026 and 2027. Everyone born in those spans shares the sign, which is why house and aspects say more than the sign alone.
What does Chiron mean in each house?
The house is where the theme becomes concrete. If you are new to houses, our guide to the 12 houses covers the basics.
- 1st: self-image and the body; how you show up.
- 2nd: money, possessions, self-worth.
- 3rd: speaking, learning, siblings.
- 4th: home, family, roots.
- 5th: creativity, play, romance, children.
- 6th: work routines, health habits.
- 7th: close partnerships and being chosen.
- 8th: intimacy, shared resources, loss.
- 9th: belief, study, travel.
- 10th: career, reputation, authority.
- 11th: friends, groups, belonging.
- 12th: solitude, hidden fears, retreat.
What is the Chiron return at around age 50?
A Chiron return happens when transiting Chiron comes back to the exact sign and degree it held when you were born. With an orbit of roughly 50 to 51 years, it arrives at about age 50, between the Saturn return near 29 and the second Saturn return in the late fifties. Unlike Chiron's other cycles, the return falls at nearly the same age for everyone, because it completes a full orbit.
Astrologers describe this period as a time when old sore spots resurface with a different meaning. Questions about health, ageing parents, career and what you want to pass on often come up at this stage of life anyway, and the Chiron return gives them a symbolic frame. The usual advice is to look at the sign and house of your natal Chiron and ask what you now understand about that area that you could not see at 20.
Chiron's earlier contacts behave differently. Its first square and its opposition can arrive at very different ages for different generations, since Chiron races through some signs and crawls through others.
How do I find my Chiron sign?
An honest note first: a Faltastik astrology reading calculates your Birth Chart with the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, the rising sign and the 12 houses. It does not calculate Chiron. For Chiron you need an ephemeris or another chart program.
- Write down your birth date, exact birth time and birthplace.
- Look up Chiron's position for your birth date in an ephemeris, a table of daily planetary positions. Chiron moves slowly, so the date alone usually gives the sign.
- Enter your details in a Faltastik astrology reading to get your house cusps and rising sign, then place Chiron's degree in the matching house.
- Check whether Chiron sits within a few degrees of your Sun, Moon, Ascendant or a personal planet.
- Read sign, house and contacts together rather than one piece at a time.
If you do not know your birth time, Faltastik assumes noon. Your Moon sign and rising sign may then be uncertain, and Chiron's house will be uncertain too.
Where should you take your chart next?
Once you know your Chiron placement, put it beside your core chart. An astrology reading on Faltastik works from your Sun, Moon, rising sign and houses, and you can bring your Chiron notes to it as your own question. For other optional chart points, see our pieces on Black Moon Lilith and the solar return chart.
Chiron offers language for a sore spot, not treatment for it. If a theme it touches feels heavy or persistent, speaking with a qualified mental health professional is the right next step, and astrology can sit alongside that support, never in its place.
