Black Moon Lilith is not a planet or a moon: it is the point where the Moon's orbit sits farthest from Earth, called the lunar apogee. In astrology it marks a sensitive spot in your Birth Chart linked to suppressed desire, personal boundaries and the parts of yourself you were taught to hide.
This guide covers what the point is astronomically, why your chart software may show two different Liliths, what each sign placement suggests, and how to find yours. It builds on the core of chart reading explained in our Big Three guide to Sun, Moon and Rising, so start there if those terms are new.
Astrology here is a tool for self-reflection and entertainment. It is not medical, legal, financial or psychological advice.
What is Black Moon Lilith in astronomy?
Black Moon Lilith is a calculated point, not an object you can see. The Moon travels around Earth on an ellipse, so its distance changes during each orbit. The closest point is the perigee, roughly 363,000 km away, and the farthest is the apogee, roughly 405,000 km away. Astrologers project the apogee onto the zodiac and call that longitude Black Moon Lilith.
Strictly speaking, the ellipse has two foci. Earth sits in one; the other is empty, and Lilith is sometimes defined as that empty focus. Seen from Earth, the empty focus and the apogee fall at the same zodiac longitude, so both definitions give the same sign and degree.
The orbit itself slowly turns forward. Because of this, the apogee completes one full circle of the zodiac in about 8.85 years, which means Black Moon Lilith spends roughly nine months in each sign. That steady pace is why people born within the same nine-month window share a Lilith sign.
What is the difference between mean Lilith and true Lilith?
Chart programs usually offer two versions, and they can disagree by several degrees, sometimes enough to change the sign.
- Mean Black Moon Lilith averages out the wobbles of the lunar orbit. It moves forward smoothly at about 40 degrees per year and never turns retrograde. Most astrologers, and most default chart settings, use this version.
- True (osculating) Lilith recalculates the apogee from the Moon's actual orbit at a single moment. The Sun's pull constantly reshapes that orbit, so true Lilith swings back and forth, can appear retrograde, and may sit up to about 30 degrees away from the mean position.
Neither is wrong; they answer different questions. Mean Lilith describes the long-term tendency, true Lilith the moment-by-moment geometry. If you are new to this point, start with mean Lilith and note the true position only when the two fall in different signs. Some software also lists an "interpolated" or "natural" apogee, which smooths the true version.
Is Black Moon Lilith the same as asteroid Lilith or the Dark Moon?
No. Three different things share the name, and articles online often mix them up. The table separates them.
| Name | What it is | Does it physically exist? |
|---|---|---|
| Black Moon Lilith | The lunar apogee, a calculated point on the Moon's orbit | It is a real geometric point, not a body |
| Asteroid Lilith (1181) | A main-belt asteroid discovered in 1927 | Yes, a small rocky body |
| Dark Moon Lilith | A hypothetical second moon of Earth reported by Georg Waltemath in 1898 | No, it was never confirmed |
When a website says "your Lilith sign", it almost always means Black Moon Lilith. If the degree you see does not match a mean or true calculation, check whether the source used the asteroid instead.
Where does the name Lilith come from?
The name comes from very old folklore. Ancient Mesopotamian texts describe night spirits called lilitu, and a figure named Lilith later appears in Jewish folklore. A medieval text, the Alphabet of Ben Sira, tells of Lilith as a first companion to Adam who refused to be ruled and left.
Modern astrology borrowed that last image of refusal and independence. The point itself has no link to the myth beyond the name, so treat the story as a symbol that shapes interpretation, not as a claim about history or religion.
What does Black Moon Lilith mean in a Birth Chart?
In a natal chart, Black Moon Lilith points to an area of life where you may feel a pull between what you want and what you were told is acceptable. Astrologers read it through a handful of recurring themes:
- Suppressed desire: wants you learned to hide, from ambition to tenderness.
- Boundaries: where you say no, or wish you had.
- Autonomy: the part of you that will not be managed by others.
- Shame and judgment: traits that once drew criticism and still feel exposed.
- Raw honesty: a place where you are unusually direct once you stop editing yourself.
Lilith is read alongside the rest of the chart, never alone. Its house shows the area of life involved, and close contacts with the Moon, Venus or Mars add colour. Many astrologers compare Lilith with your Venus sign and your Mars sign, since together they describe how you attract, pursue and protect what you want. Lilith is also often discussed next to Chiron, the subject of our guide to Chiron, the wounded healer.
What does Black Moon Lilith mean in each zodiac sign?
Each sign changes how the Lilith themes show up. Read the line for your sign as a question to reflect on, not as a verdict about who you are.
| Sign | Lilith theme | A question to ask yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Anger, independence, the right to go first | Where do I hold back my own initiative? |
| Taurus | Pleasure, the body, comfort and ownership | Do I let myself enjoy what I have earned? |
| Gemini | Speech, curiosity, saying the unsayable | Which thoughts do I keep to myself? |
| Cancer | Needs, mothering, emotional dependence | Am I allowed to need care as well as give it? |
| Leo | Visibility, pride, wanting applause | Where do I shrink to avoid seeming too much? |
| Virgo | Perfectionism, control, self-criticism | Whose standards am I really trying to meet? |
| Libra | Fairness, partnership, people-pleasing | When do I keep the peace at my own expense? |
| Scorpio | Intensity, trust, power in closeness | What would honest intimacy ask of me? |
| Sagittarius | Beliefs, freedom, dissent | Which truths do I avoid voicing? |
| Capricorn | Ambition, authority, status | Do I let myself want success openly? |
| Aquarius | Difference, rebellion, belonging | Where do I hide what makes me unusual? |
| Pisces | Sensitivity, escape, spiritual longing | How do I protect my softness without vanishing? |
As a reference point, mean Black Moon Lilith entered Capricorn in mid-September 2026 and stays there until about June 2027, so anyone born in that window has Lilith in Capricorn.
How do you find your Black Moon Lilith sign?
You need the same data as for any natal chart: date, time and place of birth. Because Lilith moves slowly, the date alone usually gives the sign; the birth time matters for the house and for the exact degree.
- Open an ephemeris or a chart program that lists Lilith. It may appear as "Black Moon", "Lilith", "mean apogee" or "osculating apogee".
- Check whether the setting is mean or true, and note both if they differ in sign.
- Find the house Lilith falls in. This requires an accurate birth time.
- Look for planets within a few degrees of Lilith, especially the Moon, Venus and Mars.
- Read the sign line in the table above as a starting question, then compare it with your lived experience.
To be clear about our own tools: a Faltastik astrology reading calculates your Birth Chart with the Sun, Moon and planets from Mercury to Pluto, your rising sign and the 12 houses, but it does not show Black Moon Lilith. Use an ephemeris for Lilith, and use your Faltastik chart for the houses and the planets that Lilith interacts with. If you do not know your birth time, the chart assumes noon, so your Moon and rising sign may be uncertain.
How should you read Lilith without fear?
Older and more sensational sources describe Lilith as a dark or dangerous point. A calmer reading works better. Lilith does not predict scandal, betrayal or misfortune; it describes a theme you may meet repeatedly, and that theme can become a source of strength once it is named.
A useful habit is to keep the reading grounded: ask where the theme already shows up in your life, what you feel when it does, and what a fair boundary would look like. If difficult feelings come up, talking to someone you trust is more useful than any chart.
What should you explore after finding your Lilith?
Lilith makes the most sense once you know your core placements. Read our Big Three guide, then see how your rising sign shapes first impressions in what a rising sign means. For houses, the guide to the 12 houses explains where Lilith's themes play out.
When you are ready to go deeper, a personal astrology reading on Faltastik looks at your Sun, Moon, rising sign and houses together, and you can add your Lilith sign from an ephemeris as a question of your own.
