What Is Turkish Coffee Cup Reading?
Turkish coffee cup reading (kahve falı) is a traditional divination practice based on interpreting the shapes left by coffee grounds at the bottom of the cup. After the cup is turned upside down onto its saucer and cooled, the patterns in the grounds are read through symbols such as birds, fish, mountains and hearts, each linked to areas of life like love, fortune, travel and work.
Rooted in 16th-century Ottoman coffeehouse culture, the tradition is still alive from Turkey to the Balkans and the Middle East. The cup is usually read in three zones: the rim area represents the near future, the middle band current events, and the bottom the past and deep emotions. On Faltastik, a photo of your cup is compared against hundreds of figures in our symbol dictionary to create a personal reading.

The Turkish Coffee Tradition
Practiced in Anatolia for centuries, coffee reading is the art of extracting meaning from the finely ground grounds left in the cup. It is inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list and every cup holds a uniquely personal story.
The handle represents the home and family; the bottom the past; the rim the near future; and the saucer the distant future. Our platform bridges this rich tradition with a digital symbol database and an expert reader network.
Cup Zones
The cup's four zones, the area of life each covers and the timeframe it stands for.
| Zone | What it covers | Timeframe |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom | The past, roots and feelings that run deep; in some readings, the distant future. | The past |
| Handle | Home, family, close circle and the querent themselves. | Now |
| Rim | The near future, usually the next 2-4 weeks. | Near future |
| Saucer | Distant future, what is leaving and doors opening outward. | Further ahead |

How does Turkish coffee reading work?
After you finish your Turkish coffee, flip the cup onto the saucer and wait 5-10 minutes for it to cool. Hold your intention, open the cup and photograph its interior and the saucer in good light from above. Upload the photo and our analysis engine identifies the symbols.
Is online coffee reading trustworthy?
The question has two parts. First, the reading itself: coffee cup reading is a traditional way of interpreting, not a forecast, and every reading on Faltastik is labelled for entertainment and reflection; it is not medical, legal or financial advice. Second, the site: Faltastik is operated by POI369 OÜ, registered in Tallinn, Estonia (Estonian Business Register code 17460510). Your first coffee reading is free, with no account and no card; after that the free plan allows 15 readings a month. Uploaded photos that are not attached to a reading, guest uploads included, are deleted automatically after 24 hours; photos attached to a reading are deleted with your account. Before your first reading you are asked separately to consent to your photo being processed by our third-party providers. You can delete your account and data from the account deletion page, and everything is permanently deleted within 30 days of the request. The privacy policy names every service provider that processes your data. Questions go to [email protected].
What do cup symbols mean?
Bird means news, fish means fortune, heart means love, star means hope, horse a journey, snake a warning about adversaries. The zone (handle, bottom, rim, saucer) where a symbol appears determines the time and domain of its meaning.
Why only Turkish coffee?
Coffee reading works specifically with Turkish coffee. Finely ground and cooked traditionally, it deposits a rich sediment that forms distinctive symbolic figures on the cup's surface. Filter or espresso coffee does not produce this symbolic terrain.
Is there a free coffee reading?
Yes, your first trial reading is free and needs no account. The free plan includes 15 readings a month; paid packages unlock longer, more detailed readings.
How often should I get a reading?
Tradition recommends waiting 40 days between readings on the same topic, long enough for symbols to manifest and new energies to form. Different topics can be tracked in separate cups.
Is the coffee reading free?
Yes. Your first coffee reading is free without creating an account; there is one trial per reading type. The free plan then allows 15 readings a month, and credit packs or a subscription unlock longer, deeper readings. Every reading is for entertainment.
