What Is Tarot Reading?

Tarot reading is a symbolic divination and self-reflection system based on interpreting the meanings of cards drawn from a special 78-card deck. The deck consists of 22 Major Arcana cards, representing life's great turning points and archetypal themes, and 56 Minor Arcana cards covering everyday emotions, relationships and events; each card also carries a different layer of meaning depending on whether it appears upright or reversed.

Rooted in illustrated card games played in 15th-century Italian courts, tarot evolved into a divination tool within Western esoteric and occult tradition from the 18th century onward and gradually spread worldwide. A reading places the cards into a predetermined layout, or spread; a three-card spread, for instance, summarizes a past-present-future flow, while larger spreads like the Celtic Cross unpack a more complex situation layer by layer. On Faltastik, the cards you draw are read for you in a personal, flowing interpretation based on their position in the spread and whether they land upright or reversed.

How Is a Tarot Reading Done?

A tarot reading starts with a clear question. The deck is shuffled, cards are laid face down into the chosen spread, then turned over one at a time. Each card answers the question its position asks: one position holds the past, another the obstacle in front of you, another the likely outcome. Orientation matters too. A reversed card usually points to energy that is blocked, delayed, or turned inward rather than expressed.

What separates a good reading from a mediocre one is not memorising individual card meanings but reading how the cards talk to each other. Three cards from the same suit in a row show which area of life dominates; a run of Major Arcana suggests events moving outside your control. Faltastik weighs all of these layers together and hands you a single continuous narrative instead of scattered card notes.

The Journey of Tarot

The tarot deck began as 'carte da trionfi' game cards in 15th-century Italy. In the 18th century Antoine Court de Gébelin linked it to the Egyptian Book of Thoth, endowing the cards with occult meaning. Arthur Waite and Pamela Colman Smith's 1909 Rider-Waite deck founded the modern symbolism we read today.

Faltastik's tarot engine reads both Rider-Waite and Thoth traditions. It interprets reversed positions, elemental relationships and the mutual influence of cards, yielding a layered, synthesized reading.

How Does an Online Tarot Reading Work?

In an online tarot reading the deck is shuffled with cryptographic randomness rather than by hand. The moment you pick a card, a draw is made from the full 78-card deck and its upright or reversed orientation is decided at the same instant. The difference from a shuffle at the table is where the result is produced, not how.

Two practical differences stand out against a face-to-face session. First, speed: the spread and its interpretation complete in seconds, with no appointment to wait for. Second, consistency: reader fatigue, a rushed session, or a mood that shifts through the day never enter the picture, so every reading arrives at the same depth. What an online reading cannot replicate exactly is the back-and-forth of sitting across from a reader. Faltastik narrows that gap with a reading screen where you can ask follow-up questions on the interpretation.

Is There a Free Tarot Reading?

Once you create an account on Faltastik you can pull a tarot reading on the free plan. The free plan includes a set number of readings; current limits are listed on the pricing page.

The difference between a free and a paid reading is not the draw itself but the depth of the interpretation. A free reading gives you the card's core meaning and what its position implies. Paid plans return longer, more detailed readings that weigh the relationships between cards and Major Arcana density together. They also keep your reading history and favourites, and let you export a reading as a PDF.
