Numerology is an ancient esoteric system holding that everything in the world carries its own mathematical frequency and energy: your name, your birth date, even the number on the house you live in. Where astrology takes its bearings from the planets, numerology reads the vibration of the digits in your birth date and your name.
Cracking the mathematical code of the universe
When Pythagoras said that number is the foundation of the universe, he was not talking about physical fact alone. He was pointing at something with real spiritual depth, and numerology inherits that claim.
Those digits work rather like a spiritual barcode. Read together, they suggest why you are here in this life, which difficulties will test you, and which potentials are waiting inside you that you have not yet used.
How numerology differs from astrology
The two systems ask similar questions from different starting material. Astrology looks upward and works from the position of the planets at your birth. Numerology stays with what is written down: the day you were born and the name you were given.
That makes numerology easier to begin with. You need no birth time, no birth place and no chart software. Everything the system needs fits on one line.
The life path number: the road your soul chose
The life path number is the most critical figure in numerology. Calculated from your whole birth date, it sets your main route through life.
The arithmetic is straightforward: add every digit of the day, month and year until you are down to a single digit. Master numbers such as 11, 22 and 33 are the exception and stay as they are.
Example: for someone born on 14 May 1990;
1+4 + 0+5 + 1+9+9+0 = 29
2+9 = 11 (a master number, so it is left standing.)
The full step-by-step method, with each number explained, is in our guide to calculating your life path number.
The core energies of 1 to 9
Every digit carries its own character and a universal theme.
- 1, the Leader: independence, initiative, ego. Souls born to draw their own line.
- 2, the Diplomat: harmony, cooperation, intuition, close relationships. The strongest empaths of the nine.
- 3, the Creative: communication, art, self-expression, cheer. A source of inspiration to others.
- 4, the Builder: system, order, hard work, discipline. Reliability made flesh.
- 5, the Traveller: freedom, change, adventure, curiosity. Never bound to one place or one shape for long.
- 6, the Teacher: love, family, responsibility, healing. Selfless souls working to make the world gentler.
- 7, the Thinker: analysis, spirituality, solitude, deep wisdom. Looks for what sits behind the visible.
- 8, the Power Holder: finance, authority, strength, karmic balance. Must learn to run the material world with spirit intact.
- 9, the Humanist: completion, universal love, forgiveness. A wise energy carrying the experience of all the numbers before it.
Name numerology: the quiet vibration of letters
Your birth date is not the only material. The name your parents gave you is no accident either. In name numerology every letter of the alphabet has a numerical value.
The vowels in your first and last name give your Soul Urge, what you actually long for inside. The consonants give your Outer Image, how other people read you. The sum of the whole gives your Expression Number, how you will reach what you are aiming at.
What numerology is useful for
If you keep living the same closed loops, keep hitting a wall in your career, or keep drawing the wrong relationships towards you, numerology can mirror back whether you are using the energy you hold in the wrong direction. Tuning to the frequency of the numbers is, in the end, a way of making peace with your own nature.
