What is an aura?
An aura is the electromagnetic energy field said to surround the physical body, and its colour is taken as a reflection of your spiritual, mental and physical state. That colour is not fixed. It shifts with your mood of the moment, with where you are in your own development, and with how much life energy you are carrying.
The core aura colours and what they mean
- Red: passion, physical energy, the survival instinct, courage. A dark red can also point to anger or stress.
- Orange: creativity, sociability, joy, appetite for life. Directly linked to the sacral chakra.
- Yellow: intelligence, logic, self-confidence, optimism. A strong yellow suggests a very active mind.
- Green: healing, balance, love, ease with nature. As the colour of the heart chakra, green appears often around healers.
- Blue: communication, honesty, calm, the ability to say what you mean.
- Indigo: strong intuition, psychic sensitivity, deep spiritual awareness. The colour of the third eye chakra.
- Violet: high spiritual connection, wisdom, universal love.
- Gold: divine protection, enlightenment, a high-vibration level of consciousness.
How to cleanse your energy field
Ordinary days leave residue. You pick up the heavy feeling in a room, an argument, a crowd, and it stays in the field around you. These are the four methods most often used to clear it.
- A salt water shower. Washing with water that has sea salt or Himalayan salt added to it is used to neutralise negative energy.
- Sage smoke. Sage is the traditional cleanser, burned to clear low-frequency energy out of the aura.
- Time outdoors. Standing barefoot on the earth, known as grounding, is the most natural way to discharge static and stress from the body.
- Meditation and visualisation. Close your eyes and picture yourself inside a sphere of clear white light. Held for a few minutes, this is used to strengthen the field rather than only clean it.
Making it a habit rather than an emergency measure
Cleansing works better as routine maintenance than as a rescue after a bad week: a shower on the days that drained you, a few minutes outdoors, one honest breath before sleep. The same principle applies to the objects you work with, which is why a deck gets the same treatment in our guide to cleansing tarot cards.
