Why a tarot deck needs cleansing
Tarot cards soak up the room they sit in and the hands that handle them, much like a sponge. After a run of intense spreads, or once someone else has shuffled your deck, the charge on the cards turns murky. That murkiness reaches your readings directly: the intuitive link loosens and the cards stop speaking cleanly.
Four ways to clear your cards
1. Smoke cleansing
The oldest and quickest method. Light a bundle of white sage or a stick of Palo Santo and move the smoke across the cards. Fan the deck out so it reaches every one of them. Say your intention aloud while you do it: "I send every stagnant and negative charge in this deck back to its source."
2. Charging with crystals
Crystals work as natural converters of energy. Rest a piece of clear quartz (for purifying) or selenite (for cleansing) on top of your tarot deck and leave it overnight. Selenite draws the heaviness out of the cards and leaves the deck ready for the next reading.
3. A full moon bath
Moonlight is a generous charger for tarot cards. On the night of a full moon, leave your deck on a windowsill where the light reaches it. The closing energy of a full moon lifts the old weight off the cards and leaves clearer intuition in its place.
4. The knocking ritual
The practical option for when time is short. Hold the deck in your non-dominant hand, the left one for most people. With your dominant hand, knock firmly but gently on the stack three times. The gesture stands for physically shaking the old charge out of the deck.
A clean deck, tuned to your own energy, passes messages on in their plainest form. If you want to work with a freshly cleared deck straight away, open a tarot spread. Card meanings are set out in the 78 card guide, and the wider background sits in our tarot section.
