Turkish coffee reading begins the moment the cup is turned over. You finish the coffee, cover the cup with its saucer, turn it three times towards your chest while holding one question in mind, and leave it to cool. The grounds settle into trails on the porcelain, and those trails are what the reader interprets.
One cup, centuries of practice
The custom goes back to the Ottoman court, where reading a cup sat somewhere between divination and long conversation. Drinking the coffee and enjoying the foam is only the opening. The reading starts when the cup is inverted and the grounds begin to draw their shapes.
Nothing about it is mechanical. The same trail can look like a bird to one person and a bare branch to another, and both readings can hold. The shapes give intuition something to work with; the meaning is built between the cup and the person looking into it.
Closing the cup: intention is everything
The most important stage is closing the cup. Once the coffee is finished, place the saucer over the rim and turn the cup three times in circles towards yourself, at chest height. While you do it, quiet the noise in your head and settle on the single subject or question you want the reading to answer.
Then leave the cup upside down to cool. Many readers put a coin or a ring on the base while it rests. This is an old belief rather than a rule: the cold of the metal is said to draw whatever is weighing on you quickly out of the cup.
The geography of the cup
Before reading a single symbol, learn the regions of the cup. A coffee cup holds coordinates of both time and place, and the same shape means different things depending on where it lands.
- The handle: the home, the household and the closest circle of the person being read for. Symbols near the handle point to family matters and to events about to arrive.
- The base: the inner world. Traces from the past, kept secrets and old hurts gather at the bottom. A base covered in thick, dark grounds says a heavy worry or a long indecision has built up.
- Near the rim: the immediate future. Brighter days, and news already on its way.

How you see a figure in the grounds depends on your own instinct. Even so, a handful of shapes have carried the same meaning for centuries, and they are the useful place to start.

The saucer: the summary and the seal
When the cup has been read, the remaining grounds drain down into the saucer. If they run and spread easily, tradition reads that as trouble leaving you quickly. The saucer is usually the closing stage, the one that gathers the whole reading up and settles it.
Reading your own cup
Start with one question, not five. Look at the cup as a whole before hunting for figures, then work outward from the handle. Say what you see, not what you hope to see.
