A cord cutting ritual is a short visualisation practice for ending the energetic tie that keeps you attached to a person after the relationship itself is over. You ground yourself, picture the cord running between you, give back what is theirs, cut it, and seal the place where it was attached.
What is an energetic cord?
Invisible energetic cords form between us and the people who enter our lives, most strongly with anyone we bonded to deeply. When a relationship ends, physically or emotionally, those cords can stay in place.
Thinking about the person constantly, feeling tired for no reason you can name, being unable to open a new chapter: these are the signs of a negative cord that has not been cut.
Why the ritual is worth doing
Cutting a cord does not mean erasing someone from your life or wishing them harm. It stops an unhealthy flow of energy between two people so that both of them can carry on freely along their own road.
That distinction matters. If you go in wanting to punish someone, you are still tied to them.
What you need
- A quiet space where you will not be interrupted
- A candle, black or white for preference
- A little sea salt
- Scissors, or just the image of them
The ritual, step by step
- Grounding. Sit comfortably, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Picture yourself safe and wrapped in white light.
- See the cord. Picture the person in front of you. Imagine a thick cord or rope running out of your heart or your solar plexus and connecting to them. Notice its colour and its texture.
- Intention and thanks. Say, out loud or inwardly: "Thank you for the lessons you taught me. I return the energy that belongs to you, and I take back the energy that belongs to me."
- The cut. Imagine an enormous pair of scissors, or a sword, made of gold or bright light. Take a deep breath, and as you breathe out, cut the cord in one movement. If you have physical scissors, make the cutting motion in the air.
- Healing. Picture the gap left in your own body where the cord was attached filling with golden light and closing over.
- Closing. Blow out the candle and wash your hands with sea salt to finish the physical side of the cleansing.
After the ritual
Drinking plenty of water for a few days afterwards is worth doing, and feeling lighter than usual is completely normal. A long attachment rarely releases in one sitting.
When you let the past go, you make room for what comes next. If you want to look at where the attachment formed in the first place, a tarot spread or a compatibility reading gives the same question a different angle, and our guide to dream interpretation covers recurring dreams about an ex.
