Moon Phases and Rhythms: New Moon and Full Moon Rituals
The Moon affects the waters (tides in the oceans) and consequently the liquids that make up 70% of our bodies. In astrology and esotericism, the Moon represents our emotions, intuition, and subconscious. Working with the different phases of the Moon allows us to align with the natural flow of the universe.
New Moon: Seeding and Intention Time
The New Moon is the dark phase when the Moon is not visible in the sky. This darkness is like a womb holding infinite potential. It is the most powerful time for new beginnings, fresh ideas, and setting intentions.
New Moon Ritual: Intention Journal
- Create a quiet space, light a candle or incense.
- On a clean, white piece of paper, write your intentions as if they have already happened (in the present tense). (e.g., "I am in a healthy and loving relationship.")
- As you read what you've written, feel the emotion in your heart of the moment this intention is realized.
- Fold the paper and keep it in a safe place until the next New Moon.
Waxing Moon (First Quarter): Taking Action
It is the period when the seeds we planted during the New Moon begin to sprout. You must take concrete steps towards your set intentions, make decisions, and show courage to overcome obstacles that come your way.
Full Moon: Enlightenment, Harvest, and Cleansing
It is the time when the Moon shines in all its glory. Energy is at its peak, emotions intensify. The Full Moon illuminates hidden things and is an excellent time to release (cleanse) situations, people, or emotions that no longer serve us.
Full Moon Ritual: Releasing
- Write down everything you want to remove from your life on a piece of paper. (Fears, toxic habits, anger, debts, etc.)
- Outdoors or safely, burn the paper, saying, "I release these energies that no longer serve me and return them to the universe."
- Pour the ashes into water (sink or stream) or bury them in the earth.
- Then take a warm shower (or use saltwater) to physically and energetically cleanse yourself.
Waning Moon (Last Quarter): Resting and Reviewing
After the Full Moon, the Moon begins to wane. This is a time for introspection, slowing down, reviewing the past, and cleansing (detoxifying) the home/mind. Instead of starting new projects, completing what is at hand is more productive.
