Cup Turning

Cup Turning is the ritual of turning the cup upside down onto the saucer after drinking the coffee. An intention is set, a wish is made, and the cup is left to cool. The grounds flow naturally, creating patterns on the saucer and cup walls.

What is Cup Turning?

Cup turning, often called closing the cup, is the act of turning a finished cup of Turkish coffee upside down onto its saucer, and it is the first step of a coffee reading. Traditionally most of the coffee is drunk and a little liquid and grounds are left at the bottom. The saucer is placed over the rim, an intention is held, and the cup is swirled toward the drinker a few times, often at chest height, then set upside down on the saucer. The cup is left to cool while the grounds run down the inner wall and onto the saucer, forming the patterns to be read. A common misconception is that there is one correct way to turn the cup; direction, number of swirls and waiting time vary by family and region. What matters is that the grounds cool and settle. You can get your coffee reading on Faltastik by uploading a photo of your closed cup.
