What Is a Birth Chart?
A birth chart, or natal chart, is an astrological map showing the positions of celestial bodies on the zodiac at the exact moment, place and time a person was born. Together with the Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign, it brings together which sign and house each of the ten planets falls in, along with the aspects between them, in a single diagram.
The chart is calculated by mapping the sky at the moment of birth against the horizon of the birthplace; this requires the birth date, ideally a birth time accurate to the minute, and the birth location. The reader evaluates the houses and signs the planets fall in and the aspects between them to read personality tendencies, strengths and the potential of different life areas; when the birth time is unknown, some calculations, particularly the rising sign and house cusps, are only approximate.
