A tarot birth card is the Major Arcana card you get by adding your day, month and year of birth as whole numbers and reducing the total until it is 22 or lower. Most people end up with a pair of cards, a few with one card or three, and the result describes a lifelong theme, not a fixed fate.
The method takes two minutes with a pen. Below you will find the exact steps, three worked dates, the nine card families every result falls into, and the yearly version that changes on each birthday.
If you came here from a relationship question, the birth card is a useful companion to a spread, not a replacement for one. Our love tarot reading guide shows how to read the cards around a real question; this page covers the number you carry into every reading.
What is a tarot birth card?
A tarot birth card is a Major Arcana card linked to your date of birth through simple addition. The idea was popularised by the American tarot author Mary K. Greer, first in Tarot Constellations (1987) and later in Who Are You in the Tarot? (2011), where she explains how to find both birth cards and year cards.
Greer usually describes the result as two cards. The higher number, between 10 and 22, is often called the personality card: the way you tend to meet the world. The single digit, between 1 and 9, is called the soul card: the deeper thread that runs underneath. When your total is already a single digit, one card plays both roles.
The calculation uses only the 22 Major Arcana cards, numbered 0 to 21 in most decks. Since the sums never reach zero, this system counts the Fool as 22. Your birth card never changes, so readers treat it as a lens for recurring patterns, not a prediction.
How do you calculate your tarot birth card?
You calculate your tarot birth card by adding the full numbers of your birth date and then adding the digits of the total. Follow these steps in order:
- Write the day, month and year as whole numbers. For 21 June 1982 that is 21, 6 and 1982.
- Add them: 21 + 6 + 1982 = 2009.
- Add the digits of that total: 2 + 0 + 0 + 9 = 11. If the result is above 22, add its digits again.
- The number you now hold (22 or lower) is your first card. If it is 10 or higher, add its digits once more to find your second card.
Three rules cover the unusual results. In Greer's method, a total of exactly 22 is read as the Fool, and 2 + 2 gives the Emperor as its partner. A total of 19 produces three cards, because 19 becomes 10 and 10 becomes 1: the Sun, the Wheel of Fortune and the Magician. A single-digit total gives you one card for both roles.
Three worked examples: which card do these dates give?
Each example below was added out in full, so you can check your own sum against the same pattern.
| Birth date | Full sum | Digit sum | Further reduction | Birth cards |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 21 June 1982 | 21 + 6 + 1982 = 2009 | 11 | 1 + 1 = 2 | Justice (11) and the High Priestess (2) |
| 14 March 1964 | 14 + 3 + 1964 = 1981 | 19 | 19 to 10 to 1 | The Sun (19), Wheel of Fortune (10), the Magician (1) |
| 12 June 1966 | 12 + 6 + 1966 = 1984 | 22 | 2 + 2 = 4 | The Fool (22) and the Emperor (4) |
A fourth case shows the single card: 9 May 1996 gives 9 + 5 + 1996 = 2010, and 2 + 0 + 1 + 0 = 3, so the Empress is both personality and soul card. Anyone born between 2000 and 2026 gets a first total between 3 and 17, so the Sun triple and the Fool cannot appear for that generation.
Which tarot birth card constellation are you in?
Greer groups the 22 cards into nine families, often called constellations, by their reduced number. Every birth card pair or triple sits inside one of them.
| Number | Cards in the family | Shared theme |
|---|---|---|
| 1-10-19 | Magician, Wheel of Fortune, Sun | Will, initiative, turning ideas into action |
| 2-11-20 | High Priestess, Justice, Judgement | Inner knowing, fairness, honest evaluation |
| 3-12-21 | Empress, Hanged Man, World | Creativity, a change of view, completion |
| 4-13 (22) | Emperor, Death, Fool | Structure, clearing what has ended, fresh starts |
| 5-14 | Hierophant, Temperance | Learning, teaching, finding the right mix |
| 6-15 | Lovers, Devil | Choice, attachment, what you value |
| 7-16 | Chariot, Tower | Drive, direction, sudden breakthroughs |
| 8-17 | Strength, Star | Gentle courage, patience, renewed hope |
| 9-18 | Hermit, Moon | Solitude, intuition, working with the unknown |
This table uses Rider-Waite-Smith numbering, where Strength is 8 and Justice is 11. In the Marseille tradition and the Thoth deck the two swap places, so 8-17 becomes Justice and the Star, and 2-11-20 holds Strength. Use the numbering of the deck you actually read with, and stay consistent. The Fool sits with 4 and 13 only when your total is exactly 22.
What is a tarot year card and how do you find it?
A tarot year card is a card for one year of your life, found by adding your birth day and birth month to the current year instead of your birth year. It uses the same reduction rules as the birth card, but it changes every year, so it works as a theme for the next twelve months rather than a lifelong signature.
Take the first example again. Someone born on 21 June looks at 2026 like this: 21 + 6 + 2026 = 2053, then 2 + 0 + 5 + 3 = 10, and 1 + 0 = 1. Their year card pair is the Wheel of Fortune and the Magician, a year about cycles turning and about acting on them. In 2027 the same person gets 21 + 6 + 2027 = 2054, which reduces to 11 and 2: Justice and the High Priestess, the same pair as their birth cards.
Readers disagree on when a year card begins. Some switch on 1 January, others on the birthday itself. Either choice works if you apply it the same way each year. A practical habit is to write the year card on the first page of a tarot journal and see which events seem to echo its theme by the following birthday. Keep the note short and specific, because vague entries are easy to fit to any card.
How is the birth card related to your life path number?
Your soul card and your numerology life path number usually match, because both come from the same date reduced to a single digit. Adding digits keeps the same remainder after division by nine, so the final digit is identical whichever order you add in.
The difference appears with master numbers. Numerology often keeps 11, 22 and 33 unreduced, while tarot reduces everything above 9. For 21 June 1982, a numerologist adds 3 + 6 + 2 and stops at 11; the tarot calculation reaches 11 as well, but then names two cards, Justice and the High Priestess. Seeing both views side by side helps you notice which theme repeats.
What can a birth card tell you, and what can it not?
A birth card gives you a vocabulary for patterns you may already recognise: how you start things, what you return to, where you get stuck. It does not tell you what will happen, who you should date or what another person feels. For daily practice, many people pull one card each morning and compare it with their birth pair; our guide to the daily tarot card explains that habit step by step.
- Read both cards together: the personality card shows the outer style, the soul card the steady core.
- Notice when your birth card appears in a spread. Many readers treat it as a sign that the question touches a core pattern.
- Look up the card meanings in a full reference, such as our complete guide to tarot card meanings, instead of relying on a one-line summary.
Treat everything here as a tool for self-reflection and entertainment. It is not medical, legal, financial or psychological advice, and decisions remain yours.
Where to go next with your birth card
Write your two cards down, then ask one clear question and see how they interact with a spread. Faltastik's tarot reading lets you type your own question and choose from five spreads: Single Card, Three Card (past, present, future), the seven-card Relationship Pyramid, the ten-card Celtic Cross and a Yearly spread that pairs naturally with your year card. If wording the question is the hard part, start with how to ask tarot questions, or browse every card in the tarot section.
