Amethyst

Amethyst: Purple quartz crystal. Strengthens intuition, provides peace, and supports spiritual connection. Associated with the crown chakra. Often kept in the bedroom as part of a calming evening routine.

What is Amethyst?

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. It gets its colour from traces of iron in its crystal structure combined with natural irradiation. It rates 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, which suits it to jewellery, and it is the birthstone for February. Its name comes from the Greek amethystos, "not drunk"; in ancient Greece it was believed to protect against drunkenness. In crystal practice amethyst is associated with calm, intuition and spiritual awareness and paired with the crown and third eye chakras, so it is held during meditation or placed under a pillow or in the bedroom. One care point: amethyst left in direct sunlight for long periods can fade, so moonlight or smoke is preferred for cleansing it. A common misconception is that amethyst treats problems such as insomnia; crystal practice does not replace medical treatment and is better seen as part of a calming routine.
