Retrograde
Retrograde is the optical illusion of a planet appearing to move backward as seen from Earth. Indicates periods of delay, revision, and introspection in related areas.
What is Retrograde?
Retrograde is the period when a planet appears, as seen from Earth, to move backward through the zodiac. The planet never actually reverses; Earth and the other planet orbit at different speeds, so as one overtakes the other the line of sight shifts. Ephemerides and birth charts mark it with a small "R" or the ℞ symbol. Mercury usually turns retrograde three times a year for about three weeks; Venus and Mars do so less often, while the outer planets spend several months retrograde every year. Astrology reads a retrograde as a time of delay, review and turning inward in the areas that planet rules. During Mercury retrograde, common advice is to double-check messages and contracts and finish open tasks. A frequent misconception is that a retrograde stops everything or always goes badly; the tradition treats it as a chance to slow down and reassess.
